Hail Horror! It Returns for 2025!

Not gonna lie…time caught up with me. With the world in a seemingly irreversible nosedive, the time for horror seems both completely unnecessary, yet at the time time vital for my sanity. And so like a bloodied angel here comes the 12th annual Hooptober Horror Movie Marathon, ready to take me away into darker and phantasmagorical nightmares. I’m back for another round, keeping my unbroken record of participating every year. That includes once again flooding your inboxes with horror reviews for the fifth straight year here on the site.

The drill remains the samel: September 15th (a mere two days away) officially kicks the marathon, and it runs until Halloween. You can see my full list on Letterboxd here, and if you’re not a member of the Letterboxd community now is a perfect time to join. At the very least come join our merry dance in the dark. Even better: play along with us and find some new favorites frightful films, or laugh along at some truly disastrous missteps…it’s all in the name of broadening our cinematic palate.

  6. 1 film from a black director with a black lead
  7. 1 film from a Mexican or Central American director

  9. 1 former Soviet state film (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan)
  10. The most popular film from the 1940s that you haven’t seen and can access
  11. 2 post-apocalyptic horror films
  12. 1 film with dreams or a dream as part of the plot
  13. 1 “The Animals are pissed at us” film
  14. 1 silent film
  15. 4 films based on novels
  16. Any film from this list that you haven’t seen
  17. 1 Ernesto Gastaldi written film
  18. 1 film from 1932
  19. The first ever specific film for the marathon: The Wizard of Oz (1939)
  20. And 1 Tobe Hooper film (there must ALWAYS be a Tobe Hooper film)
