Wait…it’s September 15th already?!
Time files when the world’s a dumpster fire and you’re wearing 10 masks and drinking Lysol to prevent the mutant hybrid of COVID, Monkey Pox and…Christ on Toast it pains me to even write it…POLIO. How to suppress the horror of real life? With cinematic horror, of course! That’s why we’re back, doing the same thing we do every year (but only for the second time here at Cinema Dual): watching a ridiculous amount of horror films and writing about it.
You know the drill: September 15th officially kicks off the 9th annual Hooptober horror marathon. This thing just gets bigger and bigger each year, and as one of the few Final Girls™ left who have participated every year since its inception I am once again pleased as poisoned punch to be sharing it with you, the discerning – and hopefully growing – Cinema Dual audience.
As always, you can see my full list on Letterboxd here, and if you’re not a member of the Letterboxd community now is a perfect time to join. Step into the light, as Zelda Rubenstein once said in some obscure movie I’m sure no one has ever heard of before. And if you’ve been thinking about it and have been reluctant, let me throw a little inducement: this year horror streaming service Screambox is giving away a free trial for Hooptober folks, so it’s the perfect chance to check out some spooky stuff you might otherwise have missed (click here and use the code HOOPTOBER)!
C’mon…play along. Horror has only gotten more strong, more weird, and more relevant with each passing year. The list of rules for those curious and intrepid are below:
- 31 films watched and reviewed
- 6 films from different countries
- 8 films from different decades
- 2 insect-centered films
- 1 horror film set in space or the future (relative to when it was released)
- 2 animated films
- 1 bloodthirsty old person/people film
- 2 1970s regional US films
- 1 film that is the worst horror sequel from the 1990s that you haven’t seen and can access.
- 1 German Silent
- 5 Films from Cronenberg, Ti West, Bill Rebane, Charles B. Pierce, William Grefe and/or Joy N. Houck Jr.
- 2 Christopher Lee films
- 1 film with a musician or band in it
- 1 Stephen King adaptation that is not the first go around
- 1 Lon Chaney film
- 1 Tobe Hooper film (there must ALWAYS be a Tobe Hooper film)
***FOR THOSE THAT LIKE TO DO EXTRA WORK: watch The Last Circus, Silent Madness, and Pennywise: The Story of IT***
My starting list (subject to change provided I still adhere to all the rules above), for those more visually inclined:

The carnage begins NOW. Hope to see you there, and here.
